Progress of HERCA Action Plan on the transposition of EU BSS Directive

On 10 November 2015, the Board of HERCA approved the information paper on the “Contamination of non-food products”. The WGE analysed the issue with regard to the handling of contaminated non-food products following an accident. This regulatory gap has so far not been properly addressed in nuclear law.
HERCA Board has approved early November two new documents prepared by the HERCA Working Group on Emergencies: Guidance for bilateral arrangements and Common understanding of Emergency Workers. These documents are the first outcomes of the HERCA Action Plan on the transposition of EU BSS Directive.
The HERCA Board met in Athens on 9-10 november 2015. The heads of the European radiological protection competent Authorities discussed the on-going and future activities of HERCA.
HERCA organised a second workshop on Radon in workplaces in the framework of the Euratom BSS directive transpoition works (12-14 October 2015, Geneva, Switzerland).
HERCA organised a workshop on “How to inspect justification and optimization in diagnostic radiology” on 6-8 October 2015 in Brussels, Belgium. This workshop has been an effective platform, bringing together inspectors among Europe, for exchanging practical ideas and experiences when it comes to inspection of justification and optimization. From these discussions, participants have produced recommendations on the practical inspection of justification and optimization within diagnostic radiology.
To introduce the HERCA WENRA approach for a better cross-border coordination of protective actions during the early phase of a nuclear accident, HERCA and WENRA held a side event during
Sigurður Magnusson, director of the Icelandic Radiation Safety Authority and the Chair of HERCA received the Bo Lindell award at the Nordic Society´s conference in Roskilde, Denmark, on 24. August.
HERCA has organised on 6-8 July 2015, a workshop kindly hosted by the French nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) in its premises in Montrouge (France) on the implementation of Radiation Protection Expert (RPE) and Radiation Protection Officer (RPO). Experts from 17 European regulatory countries participating in HERCA plus experts from international organisations such as EC, IAEA, and IRPA participated in this workshop.
